- Standard Rates: UAE (5%), Saudi Arabia (15%), Bahrain (10%), Oman (5%). Qatar and Kuwait currently have 0% VAT.
- Adding VAT:
Total Price = Net Price × (1 + Rate). (e.g. For UAE, multiply by 1.05; for Saudi, multiply by 1.15). - The #1 Mistake: NEVER subtract 5% or 15% from a gross VAT-inclusive price! That yields the wrong net amount.
- Removing VAT (Reverse Calculation):
Net Price = Gross Price ÷ (1 + Rate).
1. GCC Value Added Tax Rates Overview
Under the Common GCC VAT Agreement, Gulf member states introduced indirect taxation on consumer goods and commercial services. The current standard statutory rates are:
| Country | Standard VAT Rate | Effective Since | Tax Authority |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Arab Emirates (UAE) | 5% | January 2018 | Federal Tax Authority (FTA) |
| Saudi Arabia (KSA) | 15% (tripled from 5%) | July 2020 | ZATCA (Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority) |
| Kingdom of Bahrain | 10% (doubled from 5%) | January 2022 | National Bureau for Revenue (NBR) |
| Sultanate of Oman | 5% | April 2021 | Tax Authority (OTA) |
| Qatar & Kuwait | 0% (Postponed) | Pending legislation | Ministry of Finance |
2. Adding VAT to a Price (Exclusive → Inclusive)
When you are quoted a net price (VAT exclusive), calculating the total payable amount is straightforward:
Formula:
VAT Amount = Net Price × Rate
Total Inclusive Price = Net Price × (1 + Rate)
- In UAE/Oman (5%): A 1,000 AED laptop →
1,000 × 1.05 = 1,050 AED(VAT is 50 AED). - In Saudi Arabia (15%): A 1,000 SAR phone →
1,000 × 1.15 = 1,150 SAR(VAT is 150 SAR).
3. Removing VAT Backwards: The Math Error Everyone Makes
The most common accounting error made by freelancers, small business owners, and consumers is attempting to remove VAT by multiplying the gross amount by the tax percentage and subtracting it.
Suppose you bought an item in Dubai for 105 AED inclusive of 5% VAT.
- The WRONG Way: 105 × 0.05 = 5.25 AED. Subtract 5.25 from 105 = 99.75 AED (INCORRECT!).
- The CORRECT Way: 105 ÷ 1.05 = 100.00 AED (CORRECT!). The VAT was exactly 5.00 AED.
In Saudi Arabia (15%), this mistake is three times worse! On a 1,150 SAR bill, subtracting 15% gives 977.50 SAR, whereas the true net price was exactly 1,000 SAR (1,150 ÷ 1.15).
To extract the net price and VAT amount from any gross receipt:
- UAE & Oman (5%):
Net = Gross ÷ 1.05|VAT = Gross − Net - Saudi Arabia (15%):
Net = Gross ÷ 1.15|VAT = Gross − Net - Bahrain (10%):
Net = Gross ÷ 1.10|VAT = Gross − Net
