- The Two-Step Weighing Method: Step on your bathroom scale alone, note your weight, then step on holding your suitcase. Subtract your personal weight to get bag weight accurate within 200 grams.
- Airline Check-in Allowances: Budget carriers (IndiGo, Air India Express, flydubai, Air Arabia) usually offer 20kg or 30kg. Full-service carriers (Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad) typically allow 30kg to 35kg.
- Power Banks & Electronics: MUST be carried in hand/cabin baggage only. Strictly forbidden in checked baggage due to lithium-ion fire risks.
- Pickles, Spices & Liquids: Must be securely packaged in checked luggage. Kerala pickles (achar) or oils over 100ml are immediately confiscated at cabin security checks!
1. How to Weigh Heavy Suitcases at Home Without a Luggage Scale
Arriving at Calicut (CCJ), Kochi (COK), or Dubai (DXB) airport with an overweight bag is expensive, with airline excess baggage fees charging 40 to 80 AED per extra kilogram. If you do not own a specialized handheld digital luggage hook scale, your home bathroom scale works perfectly:
- Place your bathroom scale on a hard, flat floor (never on a carpet).
- Step onto the scale empty-handed and record your personal weight (e.g., 72.4 kg).
- Pick up the packed suitcase and hold it close to your chest. Step onto the scale again and record the combined weight (e.g., 103.8 kg).
- Subtract the two numbers:
103.8 kg − 72.4 kg = 31.4 kg. - Result: Your bag is 31.4 kg. If your ticket allowance is 30 kg, remove 1.5 kg of items before leaving home!
2. What Can Go in Checked Luggage vs Cabin Baggage?
| Item | Checked Luggage (Cargo Hold) | Cabin / Hand Baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Power Banks & Lithium Batteries | STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (Confiscated) | MANDATORY IN CABIN (Max 100Wh) |
| Laptops & Tablets | High risk of damage / theft | Permitted in cabin bag |
| Kerala Pickles (Achar) & Coconut Oil | Permitted (Wrap in triple plastic layers) | CONFISCATED (Liquids >100ml) |
| Spices, Cardamom, Black Pepper | Permitted (Sealed vacuum packs) | Permitted in small personal quantities |
| Gold Jewellery & Cash | NEVER PUT IN CHECKED BAG | Keep on person in cabin bag |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum weight permitted per single suitcase?
International airport labor and baggage handling safety laws dictate that no single suitcase may exceed 32 kg, regardless of your ticket allowance. If your ticket allows 40 kg, you must pack it across two bags.
